ImagineIT Phase 1
The following pictures were taken a the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, IL and represent the Big Idea for my ImagineIT project. While walking through the museum I was was particularly interested in how scientists were represented and what opportunities children had to "try on" the identify of a scientist.
For my ImagineIT project I am focusing on science identity and what I can do to make my students view themselves as scientists. The scientist stereotype is generally an older, white male working alone in a lab. In my video, I wanted to fight this stereotype by showing that anyone can be a scientist. However, before a students can take on the role of a scientist they need to be able to define what science is first. The video opens with various images showing some of the breadth of the field, focusing on how individuals seek to understand the world around them by observing phenomenon, asking questions, and investigating.
