Meet Team S.I.M.B.A. 

Our team name is an acronym made up of all our names: Sarah, Irena, Michael, Beverly, and Angela. We worked together daily on the projects below in addition to Amazing STEM and our ImagineIT products.

Day 1:
Shoot 'n Tweet

Fellows had 15 minutes to work together to take pictures that reveal something unique and interesting about yourself. Here I am gardening in Jayne M. Byrne Plaza.

Day 2 Quickfire:
​Video Story Problem

Teams had 30 minutes to create a video story problem that has a real world application. We were inspired by Post-It Note wars between office buildings. You can watch our problem here.

​Cosmos Quick and Dirty Guide

To prepare for our summer meetings, all fellows read Carl Sagan's "Cosmos". With our teams, we summarized each chapter for educators. Our summary of Chapter 7 can be found here.

Day 4:
Tech Tip

For my Tech Tip today I shared the Bitmoji Chrome Extension. Installing this extension allows you to insert Bitmojis directly into emails and copy and paste them virtually anywhere on the web. Some of my favorite Chrome extensions can be found here.

​Mask Making
We kicked off Day 5 making masks that will be featured in "Amazing STEM" alongside our STEM teaching moments.

​Where does it STEM from?
For this challenge each fellow received an piece a paper with a specific item on it (e.g. Play-Doh, Post It Note, Google Docs) and had to use that item to capture what STEM means to them. I had to use Google Slides for this challenge.

IDEAS Photo Assignment
Our task was to find examples of letterforms in the world around us. Each team was assigned two letters to find. Here is an "I" and a "G" I found in Jayne M. Byrne Plaza

​Day 4 Quickfire:
Creativity Guidepost Meme
For this challenge, we had to create a meme based on a guidepost from Henriksen and Mishra (2013). My team was assigned the guidepost: Link lessons to real-world learning. Here is the meme I created.

Day 5 Quickfire:
Breaking the Laws Stopmotion
For this challenge teams had 20 minutes to create a stopmotion video breaking a law a physics. Our video demonstrating the misconception that carbon dioxide is light can be found here. We used the iMotion HD app to create this video.

Day 5:
​Stopmotion Redux
I wasn't entirely please with the way our video turned out so I decided to create another break the law of gravity. The video was inspired by the book "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore" and can be viewed here. This movie was created with the iMotion HD app for iOS.

Day 7:
Illuminating Our Discipline
Fellows were challenged to think of one aspect of their discipline that amazes them, represent it artistically, and illuminate it using LED lights and copper tape. Here is my work. I'm amazed at how a tiny seed can grow into a large tree through fixing carbon.

MacGyver Challenge
​Teams built musical instruments to show how STEM is interdisciplinary. Here I am with my cardboard guitar. You can watch the entire cohort's performance of "Hot Cross Buns" here.

Day 9:
Tech Tip
Google Translate is one of my favorite augmented reality apps. It is available on iOs and Android and allows you to instantly translate written languages. It can work offline which makes it perfect for traveling.

Day 10 Quickfire:
Tune-in TV Themes
Groups had 35 minutes to rewrite a classic television theme song to incorporate the concepts that we've learned in our sessions so far. You can listen to our take on the Sesame Street theme and the other groups' themes here.
